Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's first feature film turns Dr. Seuss's mischievous Cat into an agent sent to cheer up two kids who just moved. It opens November 6, 2026 and is listed as PG, but our full content breakdown comes after release.

What parents need to know

  • This is a pre-release guide based on official information, and we will publish a full scene-level breakdown after the film opens on November 6, 2026.
  • Movie listing sites show a PG rating and the MPA's October 7, 2026 bulletin covered this film, but we have not confirmed the official rating reasons.
  • The studio calls it an adventure with an edge in which the Cat could lose his magical hat if his stunts go too far, so expect comic chaos and mischief; details about any peril are not yet known.
  • The siblings are unhappy about moving to a new town, so themes of homesickness, change and making friends are likely.
  • The 2003 live-action film with the same title was a different production rated PG for crude humor and double entendres, and that rating history should not be assumed to apply here.
  • Dr. Seuss Enterprises named Just Play its global master toy licensee in March 2026, so tie-in toys and merchandise are likely.
  • In the original book the children are home alone and the Cat ignores the fish's warnings, so the story can raise conversations about rules and responsibility.

What's the story?

This animated take on Dr. Seuss's 1957 picture book follows the Cat in the Hat, an agent for the Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration, a company that sends him to help kids. His newest assignment is to cheer up siblings Gabby and Sebastian, who are struggling after moving to a new town. If his over-the-top tricks go too far, he could lose his magical hat. Bill Hader voices the Cat, with Xochitl Gomez and Tiago Martinez as the siblings and Matt Berry as Waffles, a talking pet fish.

Is it any good?

This is a pre-release guide. We have not seen the film, so everything below comes from the studio's synopsis, the cast and crew announcements, and the Dr. Seuss book it is based on. Once the movie opens on November 6, 2026, we will add a scene-by-scene content breakdown. The source is one of the most famous beginning-reader books ever printed. In the 1957 original, two children are home alone on a rainy day when a tall talking cat arrives, turns the house upside down with the help of Thing One and Thing Two, and ignores the warnings of the family's fish. The kids clean up just before their mother returns. The film expands that idea considerably. It adds new siblings, a mother named Carmen (voiced by America Ferrera), a boss for the Cat, and a bureaucratic agency that assigns him to children who need a lift. The studio describes it as a bigger adventure with an edge, so it is not a page-by-page retelling. On rating, movie listing sites show PG, and the MPA's October 7, 2026 ratings bulletin included this title, but we have not confirmed the official rating reasons and will not guess at them. It is worth knowing that the 2003 live-action Cat in the Hat, a different film from another studio, was PG for crude humor and double entendres, and Common Sense Media recommended it for ages 9 and up. Nothing we found suggests the 2026 animated film follows that tone, but it is a good reason to preview the trailer with younger kids instead of assuming it matches the gentle book. For families, the likely draws are Bill Hader's voice performance, the Seuss humor, and a story about moving and making new friends. The likely questions are how chaotic the Cat's antics get and whether any moments tip from silly into scary. Our provisional age call is 5 and up with a parent nearby for the first viewing.

Talk to your kids about…

Conversation starters for after watching together.

  • In the book, the kids are home alone and a visitor makes a huge mess. What would you do if a guest wanted to break the family rules?
  • Gabby and Sebastian are sad about moving to a new town. What helps you feel better when something big changes?
  • The Cat gets in trouble when his ideas go too far. When does fun stop being fun?
  • What is the difference between being silly and being unkind?
  • Is it ever a good idea to hide a mistake instead of telling a grown-up? What could you do instead?

What's positive in here

Positive messages

  • Helping someone who is lonely or unhappy is the Cat's mission, according to the official synopsis.
  • Taking responsibility for a mess, a classic lesson of the original Dr. Seuss book.
  • Adjusting to a big change like a move with the help of new friends (expected from the synopsis and to be confirmed after release).

Role models

  • The Cat is set up as a helper whose job is to lift kids' spirits, although his methods cause trouble; we will assess role models after release.
