LAIKA's first PG-13 film is a dark, long stop-motion fantasy about a girl who enters a magical forest to rescue her baby brother from crows. The rating includes bloody fantasy violence and suicide-related material, so it is not a typical LAIKA family pick.

What parents need to know

  • This is a pre-release guide: the film opens October 23, 2026, and a full scene-level breakdown will be added after release.
  • It is LAIKA's first PG-13 film. The MPA descriptor is strong fantasy violence/bloody images, thematic material, suicide related material, brief partial nudity and language.
  • The suicide related material is the most serious flag. No published source explains how the subject is handled yet, so check our post-release breakdown if your child is sensitive to it.
  • The premise has an infant abducted by crows and a quest through a forest of dangerous creatures, so child-in-peril and family-separation fears are central.
  • The 'strong fantasy violence/bloody images' wording goes beyond LAIKA's earlier PG films, so expect battles with visible blood.
  • Brief partial nudity and language are also cited; the context has not been published.
  • Published runtimes range from about 130 to 140 minutes, long for an animated film.
  • Director Travis Knight says the film has intensity and heaviness but ends on a hopeful note.

What's the story?

When crows carry off her infant brother, Mac, Prue McKeel, a teenager from Portland, Oregon, follows them into the Impassable Wilderness, an enchanted forest on the edge of the city. Her classmate Curtis tags along. Inside, the two meet talking animals, rival groups and dangerous creatures, and their search for Mac grows into a wider struggle that could imperil the whole realm. The film is based on the 2011 novel by Colin Meloy, illustrated by Carson Ellis.

Is it any good?

This is a pre-release guide. Wildwood opens in U.S. theaters on October 23, 2026, so it is built from official information only: the MPA rating, the studio synopsis, the source book and what the filmmakers have said. A full content breakdown will follow after release, and we will not guess at scenes before then. What makes this one different is the rating. It is LAIKA's first PG-13 film; earlier features such as Coraline and ParaNorman were rated PG. The MPA cites strong fantasy violence/bloody images, thematic material, suicide related material, brief partial nudity and language. The phrase parents should notice is 'suicide related material.' Nothing published explains which scenes triggered it or how the subject is handled, and we will not guess. If you have a child who is sensitive to that topic, wait for our post-release breakdown. The rest of the picture is more familiar. Travis Knight, who directed Kubo and the Two Strings, directs from a script by Chris Butler, adapting the Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis novel. Peyton Elizabeth Lee voices Prue and Jacob Tremblay voices Curtis, with Carey Mulligan, Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett, Jake Johnson and Charlie Day among the voices. Fathom Entertainment handles U.S. distribution. Published runtimes range from about 130 to 140 minutes, which would make it one of the longest animated films in theaters. Knight has said the film has real intensity and weight but ends on a hopeful note, with darkness and hope as companions. Our provisional call is Yellow: this is animated, but it is PG-13 for substantial reasons. Most families will want to wait for the full breakdown before taking children under 12, and parents of 12- and 13-year-olds should read it before deciding.

Talk to your kids about…

Conversation starters for after watching together.

  • Prue goes into a dangerous forest to protect her brother. What would you be willing to risk for someone you love?
  • The director says darkness and hope are companions in this story. Why might a story need dark moments for its hopeful ending to feel earned?
  • How would you want to talk about a hard subject like suicide if a movie touches on it? (If your family needs support, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available by call or text at 988.)
  • Why do you think LAIKA chose to make a more mature fantasy this time, and how does it compare with Coraline or Kubo?

What's positive in here

Positive messages

  • Director Travis Knight describes the film as a story about the courage to step into the unknown, with a hopeful ending.
  • The studio describes a tale of love, loss, sacrifice and secrets, built around a girl's determination to rescue her infant brother.
