Jessica Chastain plays both a mother and the sinister double haunting her 8-year-old daughter in this R-rated Blumhouse and James Wan horror. A child hero does not make it a family movie; it is for adults and mature older teens.

What parents need to know

  • This is a pre-release guide: the film opens October 9, 2026, and a full scene-level breakdown will be added after release.
  • The MPA rated it R for some bloody violence and language. Viewers under 17 need a parent or adult guardian to be admitted.
  • The studio synopsis centers on an 8-year-old girl menaced by a sinister entity that looks and sounds just like her mother, so a child in danger is the heart of the story.
  • It is supernatural horror from Blumhouse and Atomic Monster (James Wan producing), directed by Rob Savage, whose earlier horror films include Host and The Boogeyman.
  • Director Rob Savage has reportedly promised about 50 jump scares, so expect a loud, startling theater experience.
  • Family conflict is part of the setup: the girl's parents' marriage is already strained, according to the studio synopsis.
  • The MPA descriptor does not list sexual content or drug use among its reasons; we will confirm after release.

What's the story?

In this supernatural horror film, an 8-year-old girl named Bela lives in a home already strained by her parents' marital troubles. At night, a sinister figure that looks and sounds just like her mother emerges from her bedroom closet and keeps asking to enter her heart. Bela calls it 'Other Mommy.' As she refuses, the presence becomes more dangerous to her whole family. The film is adapted from Josh Malerman's 2024 novel Incidents Around the House.

Is it any good?

This is a pre-release guide. Other Mommy opens in U.S. theaters on October 9, 2026, so it is built only from official information: the MPA rating, the studio synopsis, the source novel and the filmmakers' track records. A full content breakdown will follow after release, and we will not guess at scenes before then. What we know: Universal Pictures is releasing a supernatural horror film from Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, with James Wan producing and Rob Savage, who also directed The Boogeyman and Host, directing. Jessica Chastain plays the mother, Ursula, and also plays the entity, with Jay Duplass, Arabella Olivia Clark as Bela, Karen Allen, Dichen Lachman and Arian Moayed in the cast. The MPA rated it R for some bloody violence and language. 'Some bloody violence' points to a restrained R by horror standards, but the rating still means anyone under 17 needs a parent or adult guardian to attend. A child lead is not a green light. The story is about an 8-year-old in danger from something that looks and sounds like her own mother, and that kind of fear, a trusted parent turned threatening, tends to stay with younger viewers. Director Rob Savage has reportedly promised roughly 50 jump scares, and the genre's whole purpose is sustained dread. The studio has not published scene-level details, so we cannot say how graphic or how long any sequence is. Our provisional call is Red: not for kids or tweens, and a decision for parents of mature older teens only after reading the post-release breakdown. The film runs about 93 minutes, and some listings that still show it as not rated predate the official R. We will update this guide with specifics after it opens on October 9.
