The songs and heart survive the jump to live-action — but so does the peril, and it hits harder on a real-looking scale. Best for 6–7 and up.

What parents need to know

  • Several potentially frightening sequences: ocean storms, dangerous voyages, coconut pirates, a huge glow-in-the-dark crab and a giant fiery lava monster — all more intense in live-action.
  • A grandmother dies and later returns as a spirit — an emotional, grief-touching thread.
  • Frequent peril and threats, including the possibility of starving.
  • Mild language ('butt,' 'sucks,' 'dumb'). No sexual content or substance use.

What's the story?

Disney's live-action retelling of Moana: a wayfinding Pacific Islander teen sails beyond the reef to restore her island, with the demigod Maui along for the voyage. Catherine Laga'aia stars as Moana, with Dwayne Johnson returning as Maui and John Tui.

Is it any good?

This is a faithful remake — the music, the humor and the emotional core are intact. What changes is intensity. In photoreal live-action, the storms, the coconut-pirate battles, the giant glow-in-the-dark crab and the fiery lava monster all land more viscerally than the animation did. The MPAA flags action/peril, scary images, rude humor and brief thematic elements. For kids who loved the cartoon, the story is the same; the scares are a notch stronger.
