  • Slapstick violence is frequent: explosions, missiles, falls, characters flattened by trucks and a knife threat, all with little or no lasting damage.

  • Language is mild and infrequent ('damn,' 'hell,' 'piss,' and 'oh my God').
  • Sexual content is limited to a joke about a character being asked to drop his pants for a painting, and the Coyote drinks from a bottle labeled 'XXX' and turns green.

  • Themes include corporate greed and accountability, standing up to powerful companies, and a light look at the legal system.

What's the story?

Tired of his ACME gadgets backfiring every time he chases the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote hires small-time lawyer Kevin Avery (Will Forte) to sue the Acme Corporation over its faulty products. Kevin soon faces his former classmate Buddy Crane (John Cena), a high-priced attorney for the company, and the case grows into a David-versus-Goliath legal fight with Looney Tunes slapstick along the way. Directed by Dave Green and loosely inspired by Ian Frazier's 1990 New Yorker humor piece 'Coyote v. Acme.'

Is it any good?

Coyote vs. Acme is a family comedy that works on two levels at once. Kids get live-action humans sharing scenes with the Looney Tunes characters, a hapless coyote and plenty of explosions. Parents get a pointed story about corporate accountability, loosely based on a 1990 New Yorker humor article. The MPA rated it PG for cartoon violence and some language, and Common Sense Media, which names it a Common Sense Selection, recommends ages 7 and up. The slapstick is constant but cartoonish. Common Sense Media reports frequent cartoon violence with little or no lasting damage: missiles, explosions, characters hit by trucks and a knife threat. Age Rating JuJu says the film has no scary scenes, though fast, noisy action may feel intense to very young viewers. The element that can sting is an animal-testing subplot: Common Sense Media mentions cruel lab testing, and a duck appears 'naked' after one test, played for laughs. Kids who are sensitive about animals being hurt, even in cartoons, may want a reminder that this is comic fantasy. Language is mild but not zero: infrequent 'damn,' 'hell' and 'piss,' plus 'oh my God.' There is a joke about a character being asked to drop his pants for a painting, and the Coyote drinks from a bottle labeled 'XXX' that turns him green. None of these moments is sexual or centered on alcohol, but they are the ones most likely to prompt questions from younger children. What stands out for parents is the message: perseverance, friendship, teamwork and loyalty, plus a skeptical look at powerful corporations and animal testing. Because the story is a courtroom comedy, older elementary kids may also pick up a basic idea of how a lawsuit works, though Common Sense Media rates the educational value as very little. Jimmy John's and AAA are mentioned by name, and Looney Tunes and Warner Bros. characters appear constantly, which gives it a mild brand-heavy feel. For most families this is an easy yes for ages 7 and up and a solid choice for a mixed-age movie night. Age Rating JuJu suggests that parents of 3- to 7-year-olds watch alongside them, since the courtroom dialogue is aimed at older kids and adults and the youngest viewers may drift.

Role models
