Is Roblox Safe for Kids? The Setup Every Parent Should Do

A 15-minute walkthrough of the actual settings that matter.

# Is Roblox Safe for Kids? The honest answer: Roblox can be safe, but the default settings are not designed with your child in mind. The platform is enormous, mostly user-generated, and moderation is uneven. Twenty minutes of setup makes a real difference. ## 1. Set the right age on the account Roblox uses age to gate chat, friend-add behavior, and content filters. Setting your child's real age (or even a year younger if they're close to a threshold) unlocks stricter defaults. You cannot change this later without contacting support. ## 2. Account Restrictions mode For kids under 10, turn on **Account Restrictions**. Settings → Security → Account Restrictions. This locks the experience to a curated set of age-appropriate games and blocks all communication. ## 3. Chat settings For 10+, the right setting is usually: - **Who can chat with me in app:** No one - **Who can chat with me in games:** Friends only This still lets them play with people they know without exposing them to random in-game DMs. ## 4. Friend requests - **Who can send me friend requests:** No one (or Friends of Friends if your kid plays with cousins/classmates) Friend requests are the single biggest vector for adult contact attempts. Locking this down matters. ## 5. Spending controls - Turn on the **monthly spend limit** in Settings → Billing - Disable saved payment methods - For under-13s, the parental PIN is mandatory for purchases ## 6. Talk about the experiences The settings above handle 80% of the risk. The other 20% is conversation. Ask which games they play. Sit with them for ten minutes. Notice if a game has aggressive chat windows, adult-themed avatars, or anything else that doesn't fit. Roblox isn't an inherently unsafe platform. It's a city the size of a country. You wouldn't drop your kid in the middle of one without a few rules — same logic here.
